Sargent (American, 1839–1912) • Cedar Rapids, Iowa • circa 1911 • 34¼ inches high Peter Sargent, a self-taught craftsman, took up the hobby of furniture making and marquetry after retiring from work as a railroad engineer and mechanic. Having lived in Cedar Rapids at various points during his adult life, the New Hampshire native settled there in his final years, creating this table as a detailed and exuberant visual history of his adopted hometown.
