Longwood, Winterthur, and Dumbarton Oaks are a few of the surviving examples. Although public institutions today, they were created as private pleasure grounds, horticulturally ambitious and carefully furnished in a traditional style that appears divorced from the modernism movement taking place at the time. Although critics and historians have positioned modernism and traditional style on divergent paths, a reexamination of this widely accepted dogma is in order. Join us for a highly visual lecture that examines the question “What makes a modernist garden?” Photo: Hortus, Ltd.
