Annual Delaware Antiques Show 2019

Irresistibly Irish: Decorative Arts from the Winterthur Collection By Ann Wagner Ireland’s cultural heritage and arts are deeply imbedded in American museum collections as well as everyday life. Irish immigrants and their descendants wove diverse religious, culinary, artistic, political, and social practices into the fabric of each American colony. This exhibition celebrates those connections with selected artwork that, with a little investigation, shares public and private stories worth retelling. Making the selections was challenging, as innumerable, often unidentified Irish-born artists and craftspeople contributed to “American” arts. Fig. 1. Commemorative earthenware jug, probably made in Ireland, 1847–50. Inscribed: D. O’Connell MP. Born August-6th-1775. He died May 15th-1847 at Genoa. Gift of Barbara P. Katz 2007.0028.001 — 22 —
