This rarity is famously illustrated in Wallace Nutting, Furniture Treasury (Framingham,MA, 1928), no. 180, and fashioned from dense dark mahogany, with red cedar secondary wood indicative of Massachusetts or Rhode Island origin, circa 1760. It retains a fine old finish and the original rococo brass hardware likely cast in Birmingham, England, 7 ½ x 10 ½ x 6 ½ inches. An engraved plaque on the underside is dated “January 29th 1761.” This gem is further enhanced by a notable provenance from the pioneer Americana collector William B. Goodwin (1866-1950) of Hartford and sold by Israel Sack in 1939 to Charles K. Davis (1889-1968), a renowned furniture collector whose family treasured it for nearly eighty years.
